Rebecca Sophia Clarke

Rebecca Sophia Clarke ( born February 22, 1833 in Norridgewock, Maine; † August 16, 1906 in ibid ) was an American writer.

Life

Rebecca Sophia Clarke was the daughter of Asa and Sophia Clarke. She was educated at home, including in ancient Greek and Latin. Your school she graduated from the Female Academy of Norridgewock. Then she moved to Evansville, Indiana, where she taught for ten years as a teacher. When her hearing was getting worse, she returned in 1861 in her family home after Norridgewock, where she lived with her sister Sarah Jones Clarke ( 1840-1929 ), who worked as a writer under the name Penn Shirley together.

In the same year she published under the pseudonym Sophie May her first story at the Memphis Appeal. With her ​​first novel, Little Prudy, which appeared in 1864, Clarke began her career as a children's book author. Her three nieces served henceforth as inspiration for her three fictional girl characters Prudy, Susy, and Dotty Dimple. Until 1903, she wrote 45 books.
