Recess (break)

As a school break (partly as a class break, in the upper work interruption phase (AUP) ) are referred to the breaks between lessons.

Break types

Depending on the type of school and classes begin, and the determination by the General Conference in consultation with the parent representatives pause times of the individual schools are of different lengths. They range from 15 minutes to 1 hour. The first big break is usually in the range of 9:30 to 10:15 clock, the next follows after two more school hours and is about 11:30 clock, during the lunch break after the end of morning classes, so usually after 13:00 clock occurs. In general, there are three different types of school break:

• Little break
• Big Break
• Lunchtime

During the break serves with a duration of about 5 to 10 minutes to change the classroom, allow the big breaks with a length of about 15-20 minutes to eat something to entertain yourself and stretch your legs on the playground to represented. As in primary schools usually there is no need to change the teacher or the room where the teaching of blocks is divided there that are after every two lessons interrupted by long pauses. The division into blocks is also found in some Bavarian secondary schools.

This " big breaks " often for this reason the term " Hofpause ". Here, the student, except in rainy or otherwise inclement weather (in this case, there is the so-called " Rain Delay ", that is ordered by the head teacher ) must stay on the playground, where they usually supervised by one or more teachers be. The pause times are determined by the academic regulations of the individual states, the break order is set usually by the upperclassmen.

The lunch break there is, among others, in all-day schools, where it is used to food distribution and food intake.

Purpose

Medically speaking school breaks are not only useful, but also essential to enable both the students and the teaching ends for the continuation of the school day. With younger students it is the urge to move after prolonged sitting still, the order is taken into account. Older children and young people and adults are the breaks also for the processing of the currently switched fabric. In both, they are also for the purpose of social contact care, a criterion of social skills suitable.

In recent times, ill-treatment of individual students have made by their classmates during school breaks headlines ( see also: bullying at school). Individual schools are therefore required to ensure the duty of supervision during breaks, so a break supervision plan must be posted in all staff rooms.
