Red-and-blue Lory

Talaud lory ( Eos histrio talautensis )

The lory or Harlekinlori ( Eos histrio ) is a species of parrot in the genus Rotloris. It is endemic to Sangihe, Talaud and Miangas Islands north of Sulawesi (Indonesia).

Features

The body length of the lory is 31 cm. He is the only species of the genus with blue breast band and a blue ribbon from the eye to above the ear-coverts. Mantle and back are blue, shoulder feathers, flight feathers and black pants, the tail reddish- purple. From the top of the head to the back of the head is all a violet- blue spot. The beak is orange.

In E. h histrio the blue eye-streak extends from the eye over the ear-coverts and sides of the neck to the blue of the mantle and upper back. The upper wing coverts are red with black feather tips. The elytra of E. h talautensis are less colored black. In E. h challengeri the blue eyes glancing does not touch the coat, the blue breast band is less extensive and interspersed with red.

Way of life

The lory lives in forests, but also visited agricultural land. Its diet consists of fruits and insects. As nesting sites serve him tree hollows of tall trees. The main breeding season seems to be May to June, it nests but probably also in other months.

Subspecies and distribution

From lory three subspecies are distinguished:

  • The lory ( E. h histrio ), ie the nominate form lives on Siau, Ruang and Sangihe Islands.
  • The Talaud lory ( E. h talautensis Meyer & Wiglesworth, 1894) can be found on the three Talaud Islands Karakelong, Salebabu and Kabaruang.
  • The Nenusa - lory ( E. h challengeri Salvadori, 1891) of Nenusa and / or Miangas.

Threats and conservation

The lory is threatened by habitat loss and by year-round fishing, especially for the local trade in pet birds. On the Talaud islands of the lory of the most frequently encountered bird is in captivity. The use of insecticides and the transmission of diseases by birds escaped from caged hens are other potential hazards. On Sangihe is the way as a result of the decline in lowland rain forests extinct. According to the fund for endangered parrots is only the population on the island Karakelong viable.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources ( IUCN) classifies the lory due to the very small distribution area and the decrease of the stock, to a large extent by catches for trade, as endangered ( Endangered, EN) a. He's in Endangered Species Convention ( CITES) in Appendix I and in EC Regulation 709/2010 [ EC ] listed in Annex A and strictly protected under the Federal Nature Conservation Act [ BG ] (Status :: s ).

Diademloris in human hands

1871 Diademloris were exhibited in London for the first time. Few animals live in specialized bird parks and zoos. Partly offspring are occupied only since 1995.
