Red-bellied mosaic-tailed rat

Protochromys fellowsi is a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ). She is the only member of the genus Protochromys, but it is sometimes classified in Melomys.

The type reaches a body length of up to 18 centimeters, the tail is longer than the trunk. Their fur is gray brown on the back, the belly is bright red color.

This rodent is widespread in eastern New Guinea. It inhabits mountain forests, 1800-2600 m above sea level and keeps likes to be in mossy areas. Otherwise, little is known about their way of life.

Protochromys fellowsi is widespread and common, the IUCN lists the species as " not at risk " ( least concern ).
