Red-capped tamarin

The Rotkappentamarin ( Saguinus pileatus ) is a primate of the family of marmosets ( Callitrichidae ). He is closely related to the Schnurrbarttamarin, as its subspecies he is sometimes performed.

Features

Rotkappentamarine, like all tamarins relatively small primates. Their fur is mostly black in color, the top of the head is dark red. Are located on the lips, white hair, this " mustache" is, however, smaller than that of Schnurrbarttamarins. As with all marmosets are located on the fingers and toes (except the big toe ) claws instead of nails.

Distribution and habitat

Rotkappentamarine live in the western Amazon Basin in South America. Its distribution area is located in western Brazil south of the Amazon in the rivers Rio and Rio Tefe Coari. Their habitat are rainforests, where they frequently occur in secondary forests and forest edges, which are densely covered with undergrowth.

Way of life

Little is known about the habits of these primates, presumably it is broadly in line with the Schnurrbarttamarine. Consequently, they are diurnal and arboreal, living together in small groups and mainly feed on fruits and insects.

Endangering

There are no known hazards, the IUCN lists the Rotkappentamarin as " not at risk " ( least concern ).
