Reef knot

The square knot - even double knot, Reffknoten, Samaritan knot or reef knot - a knot for joining two rope or thread ends.

History

The Roman scholar Pliny the Elder ( 23-79 AD) alleged by the square knot (then Hercules node ): "Wounds that are closed to the Hercules knot, heal faster."

Use

This node is suitable for connecting equally strong cords. For connecting cables, especially if it lives, health or values depend on the Reffknoten is a poor choice. It's fast incorrectly linked ( thieves node or Indian nodes ), but also bound correctly he is not sure. Cliff Word W. Ashley sees in him one of the most dangerous node.

  • When sailing the excess cloth is tied with a square knot when reefing the sail. It is therefore also referred to as " Reffknoten ".
  • In organizations the triangle cloth is tied together with the square knot. It is therefore also referred to as the " Samaritan node ".
  • He is also a universally common node to headscarves.
  • Often he is ( " finger on it " ) is also used for bundling of newsprint or for tying packages.
  • For gift packages a double loop is often attached or the ends of the paper curled cord.
  • The reef knot can at misapplication easily tip over ( " capsize " ), for example when it is pulled through a ring or eyelet. This produces on the admitted flipped a page anchor stitch, which immediately dissolves when loading or slip out.
  • What is a dangerous hand, is useful in solving a square knot tightened. Open he can usually by pulling apart the two adjacent ends; then he flips to the lark and can be removed so easily.
  • The same effect can also be used to "choke ". The straight rope is held, and the knot pushed to the limit. The node is tilted back with train. In case of heavy rope friction, the tipping back is not possible. Then secures a simple knot in the rope straight.
  • If the square knot is put on panties, he can still be opened under load.
  • Double down on slip gives the shoe loop.
  • For secure connection of equally strong ropes of the Flemish Eight node Zeppelinstek or the variants of the Fischer node should be used. For ropes of different thickness or a Schotstek Zeisingstek are better.
  • The square knot reduces the load of the rope by about 55%.
  • The square knot is the thinnest node, which is why it is preferred by the weaver to connect the threads. He goes so smoothly through the Weber- heddle or heald frame of the strands.

Tie

The square knot is tied by placing two overhand knot on each other. It should be noted that the two overhand knot have different orientation - ie left over right, then right over left (or both vice versa). In the square knot the ends are parallel, and the node is flat.

The square knot is also suitable for connecting pull wires (eg, fence, mesh nodes ). The two ends are bent, bent the half- circles around 45 °. Two free ends lying on the same side, the bends pointing in opposite directions. Figure 1 shows the blue decapitation to the viewer, the red to the bottom (shadow ).

Red cross- wire is placed in the blue eye, which is then fed sheet. ( Fig. 2).

The blue long wire is placed in the red eye, which is also fed sheet. ( Fig. 3).

Both free ends are pushed into each different colored eye ( Fig. 4).

Subject creates a false Indian node, also called " housewife node " Austro " Button". He is unreliable and very difficult to open. In the Indian node, the ends come out at an angle. Also can give the thieves unsafe nodes. Be sure to note that both long rope ends not by rushing at train!

In order to secure the two ends against tilting and removing noise, a half hitch, a two-strand Bändselknoten or a Double fisherman's knot are attached.

Alternatives

  • Best alternative is the Flemish eight knot. Easy to make and sure he has become the standard connection node in climbing as well as the fire department.
  • Difficult to establish but very safe with low attenuation of the tensile strength is the Zeppelinstek. Even after extreme stress it can be solved yet.
  • For securely joining two unequal thickness ropes Schotstek is more suitable.
  • To connect wet, slippery ropes suitable the fishing knots.
  • For heavy and thicker rope to offers of Trossenstek.

Visually similar node

A similar appearance has the Indian node, also called " housewife knots", and the thieves knot, which is also called false square knot. Both are unsafe node and is not suitable for use. The reasons are described in the articles knot strength and loop shoe.
