Reference model

From a reference model is when there is a general model for a class of facts which has the following properties:

  • On the basis of the general model can be planned special models ( the basis for the construction of very specific situations ).
  • The general model can be used as a comparison object. That is, it allows for comparisons with other models that describe the same facts.

The reference model thus represents a model pattern or design pattern that can be considered as ideal-typical model for the class of situations to be modeled.

One reason for the development of reference models is the reusability of existing models, which leads to a reduction in costs to build the model with it. Furthermore, the easy modification of advantage, since they can contribute to the fulfillment of new or changed requirements, or to adapt the models to specific requirements and different user groups. It can also be used for the general description of systems, for example, when selecting a system as a reference standard.

Types and areas of

  • Standard software reference models describe structures, functions and processes, as supported by the use of a specific standard software.
  • Independent software industry reference models are used to describe the typical industry-specific processes and structures, what is understood under Common Practice.
  • Applications are available in abundance: so used to reference models as a starting point for the development of a specific business model, so that it leads to a simplification of modeling. They are also used, with a view to assisting in the implementation of standard application software for documentation. In the area of benchmarking comparing reference models to recognize real company to potential improvements. In addition, you can also create a collection of empirical knowledge with them.

Examples

  • The Von Neumann architecture is presented and a 1945 until today mainly used reference model for computer.
  • Network protocols; particularly the OSI reference model, TCP / IP reference model
  • Most video cards are in the reference design by the manufacturer of the graphics processors; the manufacturers of graphics cards is it usually free to take on this design.
  • The SCOR model as a reference model for processes in the supply chain.
