Refuge Francesco Gonella

The Rifugio Francesco Gonella (sometimes Rifugio del Dôme ) is a refuge in the Aosta Valley in the Graian within the Mont- Blanc massif. It lies at an altitude of 3071 m in the Val Veny within the municipality of Courmayeur near the glacier Ghiacciaio del Dôme. The refuge is located on the Italian normal route to Mont Blanc.

History

The Rifugio Francesco Gonella was built in 1962. It is dedicated to the Turin climbers Francesco Gonella. An earlier hut was built in the year 1891 and also serves now as a winter camp. The cottage is renovated since August 2006. The reopening is scheduled for July 2011.

Increase

The walk starts at the car park of La Visaille / Plan Lognan (1670 m). First of all, follow the driveway toward plan Combal (1990 m). Nearby is Lake Miage. About the Ghiacciaio del Miage today lead the hut boarding number S15 to the past to 3071 m hut.

At about 2500 m on the resulting Dôme du Goûter Ghiacciaio del Dôme (French Glacier du Dôme) flows into the Miage at around 2400 m, it is achieved by Ghiacciaio del Monte Bianco (French Glacier du Mont Blanc), which consists of the southwest slopes Mont Blanc is fed.

At an altitude of 2650 m finally leaving this Miage glacier and climbing on rock and meadows to the hut.

About 5 ½ hours are to be estimated for the whole, some difficulty having way from the parking lot at La Visaille to Rifugio Francesco Gonella.
