Regent's Park

Regent 's Park ( officially The Regent 's Park ) is one of the Royal Parks in London. It is located in the northern part of the center of London in the borough City of Westminster and Camden.

The two- square kilometer park is surrounded by a ring road, the Outer Circle; in the middle turn, is an inner ring road, the Inner Circle. The latter surrounds the Queen Mary 's Gardens, the most carefully tended section of the park. Apart from the rings and two link roads between the park is reserved for pedestrians. The southern, eastern and most of the park boundary are of white, decorated with stucco row houses ( stucco terraces ) lined, designed early 19th century by architect John Nash. In the north of the park from Regent's Canal is limited, which connects the Grand Union Canal with the Docklands.

Regent 's Park consists mainly of lawns with plenty of leisure facilities, including a lake with rowing boats and numerous water birds, a colony of herons, sports facilities and children's playgrounds. At the northern end of the park is the London Zoo. There are numerous publicly accessible gardens, including the Queen Mary 's Gardens with an open-air theater within the Inner Circle, a formal Italian garden with adjacent informal English Gardens in the southeast corner, and the gardens of St John 's Lodge. Winfield House, the residence of the Ambassador of the United States, located on a private property on the west side. Next door is the London Central Mosque, the largest mosque in the city.

Is the Regent 's College, where many higher education institutions are housed, including the Regent's Business School London, the European Business School and the British American College London on the outside of the Inner Circle.

History

The country, which was formerly known as Marylebone Park was purchased by King Henry VIII. The terrain was a royal domain until 1646 and was then awarded to the Duke of Portland as a hunting ground. As the feud in 1811 was extinguished, the Prince Regent ( later King George IV ) commissioned architect John Nash to create a design plan for the area.

Nash had planned a palace for the Prince Regent and some mansions for his friends. But when in 1818 the construction work should start, the Prince Regent had instead Buckingham Palace building. Shortly afterwards, the public park was opened. Most row houses around the park but have been built. The Regent 's Park was part of a large urban expansion zone from St James ' Park in the south to Parliament Hill in the north, a hill in Hampstead Heath, led.

During the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics should start and finish area for the competitions in road cycling are established on the park grounds. There were planned temporary bleachers for 3,000 spectators. The plans were rejected: The road races were held in central London on the main avenue of The Mall, the individual time trial took place on the streets around the Hampton Court Palace. Provided in Regent's Park were also two temporary stadiums for baseball and softball, but the IOC emphasized these sports on 8 July 2005 from the Olympic program.
