Reginald Punnett

Reginald Punnett Crundall ( born June 20, 1875 in Tonbridge, Kent, † January 3, 1967 in Bilbrook, Somerset ) was a British geneticist.

Life and work

In 1898 he completed his studies in zoology at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, successfully, although he originally wanted to study medicine there. After graduating, he remained at that college. In 1905 he discovered the coupled inheritance of genes. Together with William Bateson in 1910 he founded the Journal of Genetics.

Punnett the first Arthur Balfour Professor of Genetics at Cambridge was, after Bateson in 1912 left the university. In the same year Punnett was also a member of the Royal Society. In 1922 he was awarded by the Royal Society Darwin Medal. In 1940 he retired.
