Reginar III, Count of Hainaut

Reginar III. Long neck ( † 971-997 ), from the family of Reginare was a Count of Hainaut. He was a son of Count Reginar II, which was probably died around 931/932.

Reginar and his brother Rudolf were attacked 944 of the West Frankish Hugo Magnus Dux. The primary aspiration of Reginar brothers lay in the recovery of the ducal power in Lorraine, who had lost her uncle Giselbert 939. Consequently, they revolted several times against the new Duke Conrad the Red, the son of Emperor Otto I the Great. The inability of the Duke to calm the situation in Lorraine contributed to his dismissal in May 953. However, the Emperor now awarded the Duchy of Lorraine to his brother Brun, who was ordained at the same time as Archbishop of Cologne.

Consequently Reginar continued his opposition and was able to win a victory over Brun, he invaded in March by 955 in Liege, the Bishop Rather distribution and once the kindred Balderich appointed bishop. The Archbishop - Duke was forced to accept this. In the year 956 attacked Reginar Brussels, which was once given by his uncle, Duke Giesel Bert, his wife Gerberga. The Allies overran 957 Hainaut and took the family Reginars caught what he had to give not only to the conquered country he, but also lost its influence. Hainaut was subsequently divided into two new authorities, the Margraviate of Valenciennes and the County of Mons, which were filled with confidence men Bruns of Cologne.

Reginar III. died in exile, but his sons later returned with West Frankish support to Lorraine back and fought successfully to their heritage.
