Registered Cossacks of the Russian Federation

Registered Cossacks of the Russian Federation (Russian Реестровое казачество Российской Федерации ) are Cossacks in paramilitary formations, largely volunteer for public agencies as well as government organizations and institutions on the basis of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation of 5 December 2005 № 154 -FZ On the public services of Russian Cossacks in Russia operate or be employed.

In peacetime, the registered Cossacks for the following activities and functions are used:

  • For the conservation, protection and restoration of forests;
  • The patriotic education of young people and they prepared for military service before;
  • To natural disasters, accidents, disasters and other emergencies;
  • To extinguish forest fires and other fires;
  • For the protection of public order;
  • For border protection and security of the state border;
  • For protection in the municipalities and the municipal institutions and organizations;

Registered Cossacks in modern Russia exercise a substitute function on behalf of the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation. Currently, the Russian Federation has 11 Registered Cossack associations. The registered Cossacks, the government grants certain privileges in Russian society. The Cossacks have further military ranks and get similar to other state institutions relevant orders and awards. On his uniform bears the registered Cossack, in addition to the rank insignia, medals and decorations, a Kantschu (belt whip ), a sword and a dagger and, in certain cases, firearms.

The Cossack organizations see themselves as successors of the former Russian Cossacks of Tsarist Russia and as their new Jessaul, for the authorized representative of the president ( commander of the Cossacks ), in the rank of Cossack General and the President of the Russian Federation. In Russia there is to be up to 10 million Cossacks and the Registered Cossack associations include approximately 740,000 people, of whom about 600,000 also exert border security tasks. In the Russian census 2010 only about 67,000 people in 2010 but designated themselves as Cossacks.

The American counterpart to the Russian registered Cossacks is to be compared to some degree with the National Guard of the United States.
