The relational view or relationship orientation is a theory of strategic management.

Relational View is complementary to the Resource - based View and differs mainly by the network focus.

RV sees the resources embedded in enterprise relationships as the essential source of competitive advantage and barrier. The focus is the analysis of sustainable competitive advantages that arise originally in enterprising overlapping relationships and are firmly embedded in it.

Similar to the resource - based view distinguishes the RV four sources of competition:

  • Relationship-based resources
  • Interorganizational routines for the exchange and combination of knowledge
  • Complementary resources and skills
  • Effective institutional framework order of network management and control

And four barriers of imitation:

  • Reciprocal linking inter-organizational resources ( Source: relationship-specific resources, knowledge sharing routines )
  • Shortage of partners ( source: complementary resources, first mover advantages )
  • Lack of divisibility of resources (separation of relationship-specific resources impossible)
  • Institutional framework

Strategic resources in RV lead to the achievement of relational bonds, which are firmly embedded in the network context. For this, the company must have the strategic advantages of the individual network companies and the network in his sights.

Relational pensions based not only on inter-organizational resources of individual partners, but also to resources that are anchored exclusively in the network structure. Relational pensions are an attribute of the whole network and no single (partner ) company.
