Reliability Centered Maintenance

RCM stands for Reliability Centered Maintenance ( Reliability Centered Maintenance ).

In the maintenance there are several strategies that can quite equal to coexist in the same company. From the fail- oriented strategy in which, after the spontaneous failure, the main attention is paid to a rapid repairs on the interval-based or periodic maintenance, at one and counts alone are triggers for the maintenance, predictive maintenance, in which components with respect to future failure be replaced preventively, to the condition-based maintenance, in which one attempts to derive measures in terms of states.

The Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM ) uses these four basic strategies and includes criteria in the assessment, which is not in the condition-based maintenance to fruition (such as business data, weather data, building data ... ).

In addition, several targets can be defined in reliability-centered maintenance. While it may be opportune in an operation to define the cost savings as a goal, is in other companies or industries, plant availability, the target and the cost is secondary. The plant safety, minimal spare part requirements and depreciation optimized strategies can target maintenance.

Ultimately it boils down to distribute the existing maintenance budget targeted to the available resources.

In an extension of the concept of reliability can then move on to the risk-based maintenance. If two identical resources an identical state with respect to all measured quantities, the latter must be included in the decision further criteria which resource is now " first " repaired.

This " soft " or better " non-technical " sizes can be made up of completely different areas. For example, you can involve the potential cost of failure of the equipment in the assessment, so that a resource whose failure caused a considerable financial loss, with a higher priority is considered as another, otherwise the same equipment with the same state vector.

Origin

RCM in 1978 for the first time mentioned in a publication, which was supported by the U.S. Department of Defense. This work documented a process in commercial aviation, which was developed over twenty years. The process showed a very high level of compliance with safety and reliability goals. The priority main carrier of this publication are and were the authorities which supported the work, the National U.S. flight authority, the aircraft industry, individual airlines, such as United Airlines, its employees and suppliers, and especially Boeing, also passengers and the public.

Influences

Reliability Centered Maintenance is including in the maintenance concept Reliability Based Maintenance to bear, where it forms a Systhese with Total Productive Maintenance. Here are, in simple terms, in addition to the RCM lifted the classical separation Linen maintenance and production and distribution activities across the organization.
