Reliance (Yacht)

Reliance was 61 meters (200 feet) from the bowsprit to the Baumnock the largest sailing yacht in the history of the America 's Cup and their time.

It was built in three months in 1903 at the Bristol shipyard of Nathanael Herreshoff as hull number 605 Reliance emerged as a defender yacht ( defender ) in the greatest secrecy, for she had for that time revolutionary details such as winches below deck, two control wheels and a hollow rudder blade. This could either be filled with water or air to change the trim. The hull was not developed until a Spartan master cabin and two toilets and resembled the inside of a tunnel made of bronze, which was reinforced by steel frames and longitudinals. The flat, wide overhanging bow was at sea sailing through the hard knocks of it. Due to the high speed of the yacht bow pounding in the waves and carried it dents that had to be knocked out after the races again from the inside.
