Remigio Morales Bermúdez

Remigio Morales Bermúdez ( born September 30, 1836 in Pica, Tarapaca, † April 1, 1894 in Lima) was a Peruvian general and politician.

Life

In 1854, he joined the military and fought in the saltpeter. He allied himself with Andrés Avelino Cáceres, the national hero and founder of the Partido Constitucional against President Miguel Iglesias. Under Caceres, he was Vice President from 1886. After the tenure of Cáceres in 1890 he became Peruvian president.

He fought the opposition to Nicolás de Piérola with repressive measures. In foreign policy, he signed a contract with Ecuador to define the boundaries and negotiated with Chile to settle the dispute over Tacna and Arica.

Morales Bermúdez died in 1894 after a short illness during his tenure. His grandson Francisco Morales Bermúdez was from 1975 to 1980 in power in Peru.
