Remo Giazotto

Remo Giazotto ( born September 4, 1910 in Rome, † August 26, 1998 in Pisa ) was an Italian musicologist, music critic and composer.

Life

Giazotto studied at the Conservatory in Milan, piano and composition at the University of Genoa literature and philosophy. From 1932 he was a critic for the Rivista musicale italiana, 1945-1949 their publishers. From 1949 to 1977 he worked for the public broadcaster RAI, first as head of the chamber music programs, starting in 1966 as director of international programs. He was also chairman of the Examination Committee of the RAI and editor of its series of composer biographies.

Music historians taught Giazotto 1957-1969 at the University of Florence. In 1962 he was appointed to the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, from 1967, he was co-editor of the Nuova rivista musicale italiana. In addition to several books on the history of music Genoa he wrote romanticized composer biographies ( Tomaso Albinoni, Alessandro Stradella, Antonio Vivaldi and Giovanni Battista Viotti, for the latter also a thematic catalog of the works marked with G).

Compositions

Giazotto became well-known through the publication of the Adagio in G Minor for Strings and Organ ( 1958), which is based on fragments of a trio sonata Tomaso Albinoni, but so far their authenticity could not be proved. Not least because of the numerous edits and use in several films it is now one of the most popular works of the "classical " music.

In addition to the Adagio Giazotto composed mainly piano pieces (including Au Tombeau de Ravel, 1957; Svago musicale, 1962) and songs (including 6 Canzoni napoletane poems by Salvatore di Giacomo, 1955).
