Remo

Remo is an American company to produce drumheads made of plastic.

History

The drummer Remo Belli began after the Second World War to experiment with making drumheads made of plastic. So far eardrums were mostly from pig bladders and animal skins. These were but little voting constant especially in fluctuating temperatures. Therefore Belli was looking for a stable material that once selected Tonstimmung keeps constant. He came across polyethylene terephthalate ( PET ), which were also distributed under the name Mylar from DuPont. Belli pressed these films in aluminum rings. After a lamination by heating these films developed a high resistance and dimensional stability. In order to mimic the look of a conventional tympanic membrane, the red-hot skins were sprinkled with a fine-grained sand. These heads also produce a warm sound of the drum and allow it to produce a noise when wiping with drum brushes.

Belli called his eardrums because of the insensitivity to temperature variations "ambassador weather king" and founded in 1957 the company Remo. Most jazz musicians preferred at the beginning of the 1960s, the sound of nature hides. However, the rock 'n' roll and rock musicians discovered the extremely stable eardrums for themselves and ensured success. So also the Ludwig drums by Ringo Starr on the Beatles lettering wore a Remo logo. The invention Remo Bellis has taken decisive influence on the development of pop and rock music because a harder rhythm and concrete teres drumming was made possible by the plastic skins. Today, the coverings of the drums almost exclusively of PET material. In many cases, these skins no longer sanded " coated", but transparent "clear" because the original sanding was omitted. In addition to a question of optics, this is mainly a question of the sound. Often drums with different combinations to see where, for example the coated batter heads and resonance heads are made clear.

Products

The company manufactures drum coverings for different types and sizes of drums. Remo is next to accessories also manufactures drums and percussion, the boilers are manufactured called a " Acousticon " wood fiber material. Conventional wood boiler drums are usually of several crosswise glued layers of veneer against each other, sometimes made of different woods. The drums from Remo, however, are made of one piece. The wood fiber material is pressed into the appropriate size. This is to provide more stability, dimensional accuracy and better resonance properties.
