Use history

The water of the Rems drove from the Middle Ages onwards, especially water mills. The built to Mühlwehre prevented long time rafting. However, although the Württemberg Müller order from 1627 called for the Floßbarmachung the Rems, but not until 1715 after the construction of the city and residence Ludwigsburg eliminated, in order heranzuschaffen that there used wood, the obstructive weirs or bypassed it with sluices. From 1723 it inspired on the river much funeral wood from the forest Schorndorfer. 1747 was the entrepreneur Braxmayer who had built numerous sluices, for ten years the raft chord on the Rems. In order to transport still more wood so over the river, was placed in the middle of the 18th century at four inflows raft lakes, which accumulated in winter, drained to the raft time and were grazed in summer. The lake on the lower reaches of the Swiss Bach at Lorch served as rafting on the upper reaches of the Rems above Lorchs, but this was abandoned in 1826 due to lack of water. The pent- 1744 Ebnisee was the most important of the Rems- raft lakes.

The first timber garden on the Rems was in Neckarrems; In 1834 a second invested in Waiblingen, whose goods envelope soon surpassed that of the Neckarremser. In the middle of the 19th century, the expansion of logging roads made the rafting on the Rems unprofitable, so that you also already discussed in the Assembly proceedings from 1849 and the Parliament of 1850, set the Rems- rafting all. This happened after the opening of the Rems Railway in 1862.

Flood protection

The water level reached in Schorndorf on 21 March 2002 with 512 centimeters and 13 January 2011 with 522 centimeters historic highs; the statistical 100-year water level is at 521 centimeters. The flooding of the flood of 2002 directed between Remshalden and Waiblingen to damages in the amount of 40 million euros.

The Water Board Rems has developed a concept for flood protection, that provides that the construction of flood retention basins. In the years 2002-2008, the retention basins Schorndorf Winter Bach, Reichenhof / Schwäbisch Gmünd and Lorch - Waldhausen were built, another is planned between Pluederhausen and Urbach.

The flood of 2011 did not lead to flooding in the Rems valley. Its main cause was the feed from the Wieslauf that opens in Schorndorf on the middle reaches. In the course of the retention basin Schorndorf Winter Bach was almost completely flooded, the above -lying basins Lorch - Waldhausen but only by the hour.

Critics of the flood concept - including the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany - complain that mainly surface sealing multiply the flood and is getting worse, and that this will not defend. According to estimates of the country from the year 2006, the settlement area in the Rems valley by 2014 increase by a further 14%.
