René Gilsi

René Gilsi ( born May 31, 1905 in St. Gallen, † January 20, 2002 ) was a Swiss graphic artist, painter and caricaturist.

He was the son of the painter and engraver Fritz Gilsi ( 1878-1961 ). He attended a grammar school during his school days in St. Gallen. Even then his great aversion to mathematics and languages ​​showed. Rather, it was interested in his childhood for drawing, and so he made after his graduation a flat painting apprenticeship. At twenty, he went to Paris for a year. He then worked as a draftsman of political cartoons in the Swiss satirical magazine Nebelspalter.

René Gilsi spent some time in Vienna and worked as a graphic artist and caricaturist in Zurich and St. Gallen. Soon he also began to write lyrics and verses to his own drawings.
