René Maugé de Cely

René Maugé († February 21, 1802 to Mary Iceland ) was a French zoologist and animal collector.

Life and work

The date of birth of René Maugé is unknown. He was born in Cély (Seine- et- Marne). From 1796 to 1798, he accompanied his friend Nicolas Baudin to the West Indies. In October 1800, he went to Le Havre aboard the Corvette Géographe and took over as chief zoologist part in the Baudin Expedition ( 1800-1803 ) in the Pacific. 1802 ill Maugé Timor of dysentery and died on 21 February 1802 Maria Iceland.

Honors

1830 named René Primevère Lesson the Blue -cheeked Mistelfresser ( Dicaeum maugei ) to Maugé. Charles de Souancé honored him in 1856 in the epithet of the Puerto Rican Conure ( Aratinga chloroptera maugei ). Other taxa are named after Maugé the Black cuckoo-dove ( Geopelia maugei ) and the brown backpack worm ( Testacella maugei ). Nicolas Baudin christened the spot on Maria Iceland, where Maugé was buried, Point Maugé.
