René Rémond

René Remond ( born September 30, 1918 in Lons- le -Saunier, Jura, † April 14, 2007 in Paris) was a French historian and political scientist.

Life

After schooling the Paris schools Lycée Carnot, Lycée Condorcet and Lycée Louis -le- Grand in 1939 he was first a soldier in World War II (for which he was awarded the Croix de Guerre ). In the 1930s he was active in the Jeunesse coed chrétienne ( JEC ), whose Secretary General, he was in 1943. In 1942, he then studied at the École Normale Supérieure, where he was taken in 1939, but initially made ​​military service, and was assistant to Pierre Renouvin. His doctoral thesis in 1952 at Charles -Henri Pouthas dealt with the perception of the United States in France from 1815 to 1852. He was then assistant at the Sorbonne, and from 1956 director of research at the Fondation nationale des sciences politiques ( FNSP ) and Maître de conférences and then Professor at the Institut d' études politiques de Paris. In 1964, he became the first professor of French history in the 20th century on the faculty of the University of Paris at Nanterre newly created. In the 1968 riots he took a mediating position. The peak in May 1968, he dodged to Rome. Then he participated in university reforms and was from 1971 to 1976 president of the newly founded University of Nanterre.

From Remond subdivision right and conservative political trends in France comes across in legitimists, Orleanist and Bonapartist. Since 1998 he was a member of the Académie française. He was a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour, was awarded the Grand Cross of the Ordre National du Mérite, was Commander of the Palmes Académique and Commandeur de Arts et Lettres.

From 1981 to January 2007, he was president of the elitist political science Fondation nationale des sciences politiques.

He is the nephew of the Bishop of Nice Paul Remond, who was honored as Righteous Among the Nations.
