Republic Monument

Cumhuriyet Anıtı ( to German: " Monument of the Republic" ) is a monument in the western half of the Taksim Square in the Turkish city of Istanbul. It commemorates the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923. Designed by the Italian Pietro Canonica monument was unveiled on August 8, 1928 by Hakkı Şinasi Pasha after two and a half years of construction.

The eleven-meter high monument shows including the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the first Prime Minister İsmet İnönü and the Chief of Staff Fevzi Cakmak. On the south-facing side of Atatürk is represented as a statesman in western- European clothing, while the northward page shows him in a military person. Among the represented persons are allegedly also two high-ranking Soviet officers, Marshal Kliment Voroshilov and the General Mikhail Frunze to see that should remind us of the military support by Lenin in the Turkish War of Liberation.

At the Monument to the Republic of official ceremonies are held on national holidays.
