Republic is a city in the U.S. state of Washington with 954 inhabitants. It is the largest municipality in Ferry County and also its county seat ( county seat ).

History

Republic was founded in the late 19th century by prospectors who successfully investigated in the region for gold. In the 20th century were located in the area rich gold mines. The place was originally called the Eureka, was officially registered in 1900 under its current name; The name goes back to one of the then largest mine operator on site, the Great Republic. The name Eureka was awarded by this time to a place in Clark County. The city is today just southeast of its original location.

North of the city, the Stone Rose Fossil Bed, a reference is about 49 million year old fossils from the Eocene.
