Res extensa

The Latin word res, which is translated in German as " thing, object, thing" or "essence", is a basic concept of philosophy. As word element located Res found in many historical terms and in imitation of the Roman law, particularly as in many legal terms.

In the philosophical ontology different basic classifications have been proposed by existing outside of mere thought objects ( res). So different, for example, René Descartes (1596-1650) between the mental (res cogitans ) and the physical (res extensa ).
