Reşat Ekrem Koçu

Reşat Ekrem Koçu (* 1905 in Istanbul, † July 6, 1975 ibid ) was one of the best known local historian Istanbul of the 20th century. He became known as a chronicler of the city of Istanbul, with its İstanbul Ansiklopedisi, the first encyclopedia of a city at all. This Koçu collected interesting facts and particular oddities (such as methods of execution, etc.) on the history and present of Istanbul. The never completed work with hand-drawn black and white illustrations first appeared in the form of supplements to the newspaper Cumhuriyet and was built in 1954 for the first time together in book form. The second Istanbul encyclopedia was finally set with the 11 band (letter G) in 1973.

Life

The mother Koçus was the daughter of a high officer of the Ottoman military, his father a journalist. Part of his childhood was spent in a Koçu Yalı on the shores of the Bosphorus. He graduated from a high school boy. As Reşat was 20 years old, his father bought a wooden chalet in Göztepe. Reşat lived a long time in this villa, which he had to sell due to family disputes later. However, he did not leave the district. Koçu studied History at Istanbul University and then worked as an assistant to the historian Ahmet Refik, until it fell out of favor because of opposition to Atatürk and lost his chair. Then Koçu worked as a history teacher at various high schools.
