Réseau Sentinelles

The Réseau Sentinels (Fr. "Power of the Guardians " ) is a French organization for the observation of national health. The network currently consists of 1260 established practitioners, the so-called Médecins sentinelles " ( " Wake doctors "); or 2% of all professional practitioners in France. Participants monitor and report the occurrence of 14 selected diseases to a central station.

The network was founded in 1984 by the Paris epidemiologist Alain- Jacques Valleron (b. 1943). Today, it is led by the Research Group No. 707 of the Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale, which belongs to the University of Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris.

Continuous monitoring of health indicators

The national surveillance system enables the collection, analysis, forecasts, and immediate playback of the current epidemimiologischen data that emerge from the work of general practitioners. It is also part of the French Health Administration ( Institut de Veille Sanitaire ).

Are monitored 14 illnesses, including 11 infections:

  • Flu since 1984,
  • Acute diarrhea ( diarrhea, gastroenteritis) since 1990,
  • Measles since 1984,
  • Mumps since 1985,
  • Chickenpox since 1990,
  • Herpes zoster since 2004,
  • Urethritis in men since 1984 and
  • Hepatitis A, B, C since 2000,

And 3 non-infectious indicators:

  • Bronchial asthma since 2002,
  • Suicide attempts since 1999, and
  • Inpatient hospital admissions since 1997.

In the case of influenza, gastroenteritis and chicken pox the occurrence, by means of this monitoring discovered by national and regional epidemics and predicted, and warnings are issued.

The anonymous data will be forwarded by the guards on the Internet. With their help, the database is created in a geographic information system. A weekly information sheet ( SentiwebHebdo ) is published every Tuesday on the website and sent via email to over 4000 subscribers as well as to the leading national media. A financial statement is also published.

Research

The information provided in the Réseau Sentinels allow the development of models for detecting and warning and prediction of epidemics at different geographical levels.

Practical epidemiology

The doctors of Sentinels perform selective epidemiological studies. When performing the data released by the Association of épidémiologistes de langue française epidemiological guidelines are respected. All tests have a serial number, which is in a written protocol, and are the subject of a final study report. They are subjected to internal audit procedures that aim to ensure their quality, and have a positive feedback from the national data protection commission CNIL learn ( No 471 393). The results of these investigations may be viewed on the website of the network.
