Residencies of British India

A Residency in British India was the district of a resident, the local ruler (see princely state ) advised and supervised. He usually had the diplomatic rank of a Political Agent ( between Consul General and Messenger ). It gave the following residencies: Hyderabad, Mysore, Jammu and Kashmir, Gwalior, Jaipur, Baroda and Mewar / Udaipur.

Usually, however, a Political Agent was responsible for several princely states. His district was the Agency. Examples: Baluchistan Agency, Rajputana Agency, Central India Agency.
