Rete celere del Canton Ticino

The S-Bahn in Ticino (it.: Rete del Canton Ticino celere ) has been operated since 2004. The line network comprises three standard gauge lines, of which the Italian-Swiss railway company TILO ( Treni Regionali Ticino Lombardia) are operated as well as the narrow gauge route of the private railway railway Lugano - Ponte Tresa ( FLP) from Lugano to Ponte Tresa. Two routes lead across borders into Lombardy.

In a later stage of development, the network will be linked more closely with the Lombard S- Bahn network of Trenord. Therefore, the Ticino routes in 2009 were renumbered from S1 to S10, S2, S20, etc. core pieces are doing the cross-border line of the S10 and S11 are from Biasca to Milan, as well as the line under construction to Varese in Italy (see below). For future routes between Milan -Malpensa Airport Lugano and the numbers S40 and S50 are reserved.

The Castione - Arbedo Station (north of Bellinzona ) was 2008/2009 modified and since 2010 serves as the terminus of the S10 and S20, whereby the power center of Bellinzona was relieved.

Plans up to 2014

To expand the network, a 17 km long railway line from Mendrisio to Varese is currently being built ( FMV, ferrovia Mendrisio- Varese). The project consists of three parts: expansion of industrial track Mendrisio- Stabio, cross-border new line Stabio - Arcisate and expansion of the FS railway Arcisate - Varese. The cost is estimated at CHF 134 million plus EUR 203 million, with commissioning scheduled for December 2014.
