The Rethe is a connecting waterway between Reiherstieg and Köhlbrand in the Port of Hamburg. Together with the former, it forms the northeastern shore of Wilhelmsburger inland island Hohe Schaar, the south-western shore is the Southern Elbe.

At the junction of Rethe from Reiherstieg is the Rethe lift bridge as a road and rail link between Hohe Schaar and Neuhof.
