Rey Commission

The EC Commission Rey (1967-1970) was the first Commission of the European Communities, which was formed as a result of the Merger Treaty of 1965.

It stipulated to unite the previously existing individual committees of the European Coal and Steel Community ( ECSC), the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM ) and the European Commission.

Commission was of the Belgians Jean Rey. Under the aegis Reys European customs union was achieved on 1 July 1968. The Commission also contributed significantly to the liberalization of trade in agricultural products and enacted laws to promote the free movement of persons within the EC. For his work at the Commission, Jean Rey was awarded on 15 May 1969 in Aachen Charlemagne Prize.
