Rhadinovirus

The genus Rhadinovirus forms a subgroup of the subfamily of gammaherpesviruses ( Gammaherpesvirinae ). This, in turn, belong to the family of herpes viruses ( Herpesviridae ). The only known human Rhadinovirus is the human herpes virus 8 (HHV -8). HHV -8 causes Kaposi's sarcoma in humans and a number of cases of Castleman's disease. Rhadinoviren are also of various ungulates (horse, wildebeest, beef) and monkeys known.

Rhadinoviren are 150 to 200 nm in diameter large, the icosahedral capsid (T = 16) within approximately 100-110 nm, the genome is wound inside the capsid on a thin, spindle- like core structure according to which the genus was named ( ῥαδινός (old Greek = slender, tapering ). the genome is 145000-165000 bp in size and is located in multiple copies (at least two ) before the virion. Additionally, the virions also contain residues or sections of cellular mRNA and DNA.
