Rheinufer Tunnel

The Düsseldorf Rheinufertunnel is a two- kilometer-long and four-lane road tunnel guided in Dusseldorf and part of the national road 1

He runs along the right bank of the Rhine and was released on 15 December 1993 after three and a half years of construction for traffic. He is considered Düsseldorf project of the century and one of the biggest projects for traffic calming, as Dusseldorf was too separated by the busy Rhine promenade from the Rhine. Meanwhile take 55,000 cars a day under the earth. A branched tube system provides for the connection of many others, often four-lane roads, such as the Rheinkniebrücke. Because of the tightness of the area, are 2 x 2 lanes towards the good half of each other. In an intervening floor, the exhibition Art in the tunnel as well as before and after it joined other tubes to where the arms of the river Dussel are led to the Rhine. The southern entrance to the Rhine River tunnel is impressive run in the form of a high-rise gate, the Düsseldorf city gate. The northern entrance is just south of the Oberkasseler bridge.

The Rheinufertunnel has the following entries and exits:

  • Dusseldorf -Bilk ( frontal south entrance, gate )
  • Dusseldorf - Unterbilk
  • WDR / port
  • Diet / Rhine Tower
  • Kniebrücke
  • Centre / Upper Kassel
  • Joseph - Beuys-Ufer (front entrance north).

Paving the way for the planning and construction of the Rhine River tunnel was the Council decision of 1976 with the mission of an assessor's investigation in this area. Result: Large parts of the port is no longer needed for the classic port handling. Thus the way was free for planning Lowering of the Rheinuferstraße. Even the annoying as the high road out of the federal road 1 should disappear. On 17 December 1987, the City Council finally passed a decision in principle on the construction and on 15 March 1990, the first sod.

For the tunnel around 235,000 cubic meters of concrete and 22,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel were used. Approximately 125,000 truckloads of earth were removed. Facilities include 72 of the tunnel fans, lights and emergency lights in 1657. Furthermore, 53 surveillance cameras are installed. 120 kilometers of cable were laid. Use of mobile phones and radio reception are possible. The construction costs amounted to half a billion euros; the annual operating costs amount to 500,000 euros.

The construction of the tunnel and the Rhine promenade came into being. It describes a total of about three kilometer walkway north and south of the Rhine tower along the banks of the right bank side of Düsseldorf. Since the traffic flow is now underground, bordering the famous district of Düsseldorf, the old town, back to the Rhine. The aboveground part of the road could be considerably through traffic and is now available for pedestrians, skaters and cyclists one of the attractions of the city, which hosts many open- air events. With further refinement of the Rhine promenade seen from the Rhine Skyline now appears very impressive.

As a result, it came to the settlement on the Rhine and fashionable architecture. At the southern end of the tunnel, the city was completely transformed in the last 25 years. So here the Rhine Tower, the building of the NRW state parliament, the Düsseldorf city gate and the media harbor emerged with the office towers designed by architect Frank Gehry.

Since October 2009, eight so-called "Black Flash " cameras with invisible flash control the speed at each tunnel beginning and end of the tunnel on both lanes in each direction. For violations during extension and retraction of the coincidence applies, so that only the more serious violation will be punished. At the same time, the speed limit of 60 to 70 km / h has been increased. Direct to the start of the commissioning of the plant, there was an error in the determined time of the crime. So you need loud authority for the passage southbound just under five minutes for the 2 km - despite speeding.
