Rhotacism
As rhotacism ( gr ῥῶ rho) is defined as the volume change of any consonant r. Are mostly affected fricatives as the s or the lateral approximant l
Examples
Examples can be found in Italian dialects that in the default language have an r instead of l or d. The examples come from the Neapolitan dialect:
- Italian medesimo is there meresimo
- Diaspora is riaspro
- Ultimo appears as urdemo
Also in Germany there are examples of this sound change:
- Sound change in the case of been and was ( cf. Engl. Hey what).
- The obsolete erkiesen ( select ) and its past form chosen ( cf. Engl. Chosen ).
- The Central Hessian Werrer for weather or Brerrer for boards.
In some Low German dialects there is also a rhotacism:
- So there are forms like orrer (or) and Werrer (weather), which are called in other dialects or and Neither.
In Iceland has developed in the z to r in Primitive Germanic with the fricative z ending words:
- Dagur ( day) daγaz from the Proto-Germanic *
- Raudur (red ) from the Proto-Germanic * rauðaz
