Rhynchobatus

Rhynchobatus djiddensis

Rhynchobatus ( Gr. " rhingchos " = snout, Lat: . " Batis " = rays) is a genus of ray ( Batoidea ). The genus stands alone in the subfamily Rhynchobatinae within the family of violin (Rhinobatidae ). The large, up to three meters long fish live in the Red Sea, Indo-Pacific and eastern Atlantic Ocean, on the west coast of Africa, on the continental shelf. They feed on bottom-dwelling fish, crustaceans and molluscs and are ovoviviparous.

Features

Rhynchobatus species mediate in appearance between sharks and rays. The front part of the body with head and snout forming an acute angle, breast and pelvic fins are clearly separated from the body, the first dorsal fin sits on the pelvic fins, the second on the caudal peduncle. The tail ends in a large, bilobed caudal fin.
