The 63 floors and 251 meters high building was designed by Gerard de Preu and Partners and built in the years 1982 to 1986. After its inauguration, the Rialto Towers in the short term were the tallest building outside North America, but they already had the title for a month at the OUB Centre in Singapore exits. It was the only time the tallest building outside North America was in Australia, because this title was usually held by European or Asian skyscrapers.

The Rialto Towers consist of two skyscrapers: a smaller north tower, which is 185 m high, and the larger south tower. The official height of 251 meters the building has a small elevator machine room, which overlooks the main roof of the south tower to 4 m. Still higher, namely 270 m, extends to the later patch antenna, but does not count on the architecture of the building.

The observation deck on the top floor remained almost 8 years unused before it was opened to the public on 19 July 1994. The Rialto Towers is the fifth tallest skyscraper in Melbourne and the sixth- tallest in Australia. In the immediate vicinity, on the other side of the Yarra River, in Southbank, the Eureka Tower, which is the second highest building in Australia and also the tallest residential building in the southern hemisphere is located.
