Ribérac

Riberac ( Occitan: Rabairac ) is a commune in the Dordogne department in the French region of Aquitaine. With 4053 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) is " Chef -lieu " ( capital ) of the Canton of Riberac.

Geography

Riberac is 30 kilometers west-northwest of Perigueux and 24 kilometers north of Mussidan. The township is surrounded by the following municipalities:

  • Villetoureix in the north and northeast
  • Saint- Méard -de- Drône in the East
  • Saint -Martin -de- Riberac in the southeast and south
  • Vanxains in the southwest
  • Comberanche -et- Épeluche in the west and northwest
  • Allemans in the northwest

In addition to the urban area covers Riberac following hamlets and farmhouses: Chez Faye, Chez Félix, Enberry, Felard, Grange, La Beauyière, La Faurie, La Petite Clavelie, La Pichie, La Vergne, Le Four, Le Moulin de la Claque, Les bidoux, Les Bories, Les Français, Les Francilloux, Les Jarisseaux, Les Levrauts, Les Peyronnets and Saint- Martial.

Riberac with its northern border touches the Dronne. The city is crossed by the Ribéraguet, a small left-hand tributary of the River Dronne in a northerly direction. To the east of Peychay, also a left-sided and draining to the north tributary of the Dronne, the border to Saint- Méard -sur- Drône forms.

The topographically lowest spot with 54 meters in the extreme northwest to a small tributary of the Dronne. The highest point at 155 meters, is located near the hamlet of Enberry on the southern border to Saint -Martin -de- Riberac.

Transport links

Riberac is a major transportation hub, meet here several roads department. In a north-south direction crosses the D 708 from La Rochebeaucourt -et- Argentine after Montpon- Ménestérol. From the East over the D 710 comes from Périgueux. To the south branches of Riberac the D 709 to Mussidan from. The same D 709 runs north- west towards Montmoreau -Saint- Cybard. About the D 5 is a connection conditions southwest to Saint- Aulaye and La Roche -Chalais. The D 20 leads west to Aubeterre -sur -Dronne and Chalais. The D 13 leaves Riberac in southern route towards the Siorac -de- Riberac and on to Saint -André- de-Double.

Riberac once had a railway station, where the now disused railway lines Magnac -Touvre - Marmande and La Cave - Parcoul - Médillac converged.

Geology

Riberac is built on flat-lying Cretaceous strata of the Campanian ( Campanian 3). The Dronneniederung consists of Holocene alluvium ( clays and sands ), which is accompanied by a south then würmzeitlichen lower terrace (sands and gravels ).

History

The oldest structure in Riberac was the medieval Château de Riberac from the 10th century, but was destroyed at the end of the 18th century. From the 12th century, the Romanesque churches of Notre Dame, Saint- Martial and Saint- Pierre de Faye come.

In 1790 was Riberac administrative headquarters of the district of the same. The formerly independent municipality Faye merged in 1793 with Riberac. Between 1790 and 1794 also Saint- Martial-de -Dronne was incorporated. From 1800 Riberac was one of the three sub-prefectures in the Dordogne, this status was in 1926 but lost again. In 1851 a part of the municipality was separated and the newly created municipality of Saint -Martin -de- Riberac add beaten.

Twinning

Since 1983, a partnership with the German town of Rietberg in North Rhine -Westphalia. As part of this twinning every year in numerous meetings between schools and clubs take place.
