Ricardo Ehrlich

Mario Ricardo Ehrlich Szalmian (* November 4, 1948 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan politician. From 2005 to 2010 he was mayor (Spanish: Intendente Municipal) of Montevideo.

Ehrlich was arrested in 1972 because of its links with the guerrilla movement MLN and went after his release from prison in 1973 to Europe, where he lived until his return in 1987 in exile in France. In the civil Cup 2005 elections Ehrlich went as a candidate of the Frente Amplio with 61 percent emerged as the winner. His nearest rival was 27 percent Pedro Bordaberry of the Partido Colorado, a son of former President Juan María Bordaberry. Honest thus became successor in office of the architect Mariano Arana. He held until 26 February 2010 this office. Since 1 March of the same year, he is a member of the cabinet of President Jose Mujica and directs the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Ricardo Ehrlich is a biochemist by profession and was until his election dean of the chemistry faculty of the University of Montevideo.
