Richard A. Snelling

Richard Arkwright Snelling ( born February 18, 1927 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, † August 13 1991 in Shelburne, Vermont ) was an American politician of the Republican Party and Governor of the State of Vermont.

Life

Snelling was born in 1927 in Allentown in eastern Pennsylvania. During the Second World War he served in the United States Army. From 1959-1960 and 1973-1976 he was a deputy in the House of Representatives from Vermont. 1976 Snelling was first elected with 53.4 percent of the vote against Democrat Stella Hackel governor of Vermont, and held that post after three re-election of January 6, 1977 to January 10, 1985 from. In 1986, he ran for the U.S. Senate, but was defeated his Democratic opponent Patrick Leahy.

1990 Snelling was again elected governor, where this time he prevailed over Peter Welch, and took office on 10 January 1991. After Snellings sudden death due to a heart attack the Democrat Howard Dean, who was lieutenant governor at the time, new Governor of Vermont was.
