Richard Andriamanjato

Richard Mahitsison Andriamanjato ( born July 31, 1930; † 16 May 2013) was a Malagasy Protestant minister and communist politician.

Life

Andriamanjato came from a Protestant family. After visiting an elementary school, he obtained his baccalaureate degree and studied from 1950 to 1957 Protestant theology in France. After passing the exam Andriamanjato was ordained as a pastor. In 1957 he participated in the Bandung Conference and became the leading figure of the part of the national movement over against Philibert Tsiranana. Andriamanjato successor was the pastor Ravelojaona as pastor at Ambohitantely temple in Antananarivo.

Andriamanjato became a member of the Council of the Protestant Federation of Madagascar. He was also elected President of the Council of Churches of Africa, was a member of the World Council of Churches in Geneva and a director of the Christian Institute for Peace.

In 1958 he founded the Party of the Independent Congress of Madagascar ( AKFM ), developed relations with the French Communist Party. It acted as the main opposition in the country for over a decade. In 1959 he was elected mayor of Antananarivo.

Andriamanjato supported Didier Ratsiraka in 1972, and in 1976 he led the AKFM in the National Front for the Defense of the Revolution, the government coalition. As a supporter of Albert Zafy he separated from Ratsiraka and AKFM in 1989 to form the Party of the Independent Congress of Madagascar / renewal. From 1991 to 1993 he was co-chairman of the transition committee for economic and social recovery together with Manandafy Rakotonirina. 1993 to 1998 he was President of the National Assembly of Madagascar, in the presidential election in November 1996, finished in fifth place with 4.94% of votes cast.

Since the 1960s Andriamanjato was a member of the Christian Peace Conference and participated in the Second Allchristlichen Peace Convocation ( ACFV ) 1964 in Prague.
