Richard Christopher Carrington

Richard Christopher Carrington ( born May 26, 1826 in Chelsea, † November 27, 1875 in Redhill, England ) was an English astronomer.

Life and career

Carrington was three years assistant to Chevallier in Durham and later built his own observatory in Redhill, on which he explored in 1854 circumpolar stars. In addition, he examined the sun, inspired by Schwabe's discovery of the relationship between the period of sunspots and the earth's magnetism. When solar storm of 1859 Carrington discovered solar flares of the sun. However, occasionally named after Carrington solar white-light event from September 1, 1859 has been observed independently by Richard Hodgson. 1863 Carrington discovered the differential rotation of the Sun. His star catalog was an important contemporary contribution to the study of astronomical objects.
