Richard Clark Barkley

Richard Clark Barkley ( born December 23, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois ) is a former high-ranking American diplomat. From December 1988 to early October 1990, he served as the last U.S. Ambassador to the German Democratic Republic (GDR ), and then from 1991 to 1994. As head of the U.S. Embassy in Turkey

Life

After studying at Michigan State University, in 1954 with a BA completed, and a subsequent MA degree at Wayne State University in 1955, graduated from Richard Barkley initially to 1957 military service in the United States Army. From 1959 to 1961 he then worked abroad as a lecturer at the University of Maryland before joining the foreign service of his country in 1962. From 1965 to 1967 he was vice-consul in Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic. After a year at Columbia University, he worked from 1968 to 1971 as assistant to the U.S. State Department for International Relations. In this function he worked from 1971 abroad, including from 1971 to 1972 in the American Embassy in Bonn and from 1972 to 1974 in the U.S. Embassy in the GDR in Berlin. After working from 1974 to 1977 as a personal assistant to Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker, he worked until 1979 in the Office of Central European Affairs (Office of Central European Affairs ) Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Richard Barkley then moved to Norway, where he was from 1979 to 1982 deputy head of the diplomatic mission of his country. From 1982 to 1985 he worked as a political adviser to the U.S. Embassy in Bonn. From 1985 he was deputy head of the U.S. embassy in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa before he was nominated on 10 June 1988 by President Ronald Reagan for the post of U.S. ambassador to the GDR. He succeeds by Francis J. Meehan on 19 December of the same year and worked until October 2, 1990, the eve of German reunification, in the U.S. Embassy in Berlin. He then worked as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Head of the U.S. embassy in Ankara on 9 October 1991 to 15 December 1994 after he was transitionally been a visiting fellow of the National Defense University.

Richard Clark Barkley is married and father of a child.
