Richard Crandall

Richard Eugene Crandall ( born December 29, 1947December 20, 2012 in Portland, Oregon) was an American computer scientist and physicist.

Crandall was known for contributions to algorithmic number theory, especially the development of the Irrational Base Discrete Weighted Transform ( IBDWT ), an important method for finding very large prime numbers. He was, until death an associate professor of computer science and director of the Center for Advanced Computation at Reed College.

With his colleague Joe Buhler he is there involved in the project for the numerical verification of the conjecture of Harry Vandiver and Ernst Eduard Kummer on the class number of cyclotomic bodies.
