Richard Cumberland (dramatist)

Richard Cumberland ( born February 19, 1732 in Cambridge, † May 7, 1811 in London ) was an English dramatist and civil servant.

Life

Cumberland comes from a family educated and influential. He was the great-grandson of the Bishop of Peterborough, son of the future Bishop of Clonfert and of Kilmore; his maternal grandfather the philologist Richard Bentley, his sister was the poet Mary Alcock. After graduation, he worked as a private secretary to Lord Halifax, followed him on new items and eventually worked in the Board of Trade, which is similar to a present-day Department of Commerce.
