Richard de Bures

Richard de Bures († probably May 9, 1247 at Tiberias ) was from 1245 to 1247, the seventeenth Grand Master of the Knights Templar. Maybe he was only deputy of the in- captivity of the Sultan as- Salih of Egypt Grand Master Armand de Périgord.

He was perhaps related to the Lords of Bures- sur -Yvette (Île- de -France ). Occasionally it is also stated that he was from the bailiwick of Bure -les- Templars ( Côte- d'Or ), the first Bailiwick of the Knights Templar in France.

Before he took over the leadership of the Order in 1241, he was castellan of the fortress-monastery of Safed, who had received back this year by Sultan as- Salih Ismail of Damascus, the Templars, and in 1243 he appears as an arbitrator on behalf of the Order.

1244 the Crusaders had suffered a devastating defeat against the Ayyubids in the battle of La Forbie. The Templar Grand Master, Armand de Périgord had fallen or died in battle in captivity. Since a majority of the Knights Templar was also dropped, it was probably difficult to gather the people legally required to select a new Grand Master. In this situation, Richard took over until further notice the office of Grand Master. Its exact position is not precisely handed and controversial in the literature.

He probably died in 1247 at the Battle at the Sea of Tiberias against the Ayyubids, was destroyed as a consequence of Tiberias.
