Richard Glover (poet)

Richard Glover, spr. glowwer, (* 1712 in London, † November 25, 1785 ) was an English epic poet.

Life

Glover was the son of a Hamburg merchant, was born in London. He learned the same profession as his father, but received an almost scholarly education. At age 16 he made his debut in 1728 successfully with his poem on Isaac Newton that was released in the same year by Dr. Henry Pemberton in his " A view of Newton 's philosophy". 1753 Richard Glover published his tragedy Boadicea, Boudicca stood in the center. From 1767 Glover was for several years member of parliament for the city of Weymouth. He died on November 25 in 1785.

Reception

1737 Glover published his epic poem " Leonidas ", which still counts as his most important. Especially the part of the Whig party he got so very much praise. This epic through several editions and was in 1764 by Johann Arnold Ebert translated into German. As a continuation of it applies the 1787 ( posthumously ) published poem "The Atheniad " in 30 songs. His " Memoirs of a Celebrated litterary and political character" (1804 ) gave rise to attribute to him the letters of Junius.
