Richard Greswell

Richard Greswell ( born July 22, 1800 Denton, Lincolnshire, † July 22, 1881 in Oxford ) was a British teacher at Worcester College, University of Oxford and re-founder of the National Society for Promoting Religious Education.

Life and work

Richard Greswell was the fourth son of the minister William Parr Greswell (1765-1854) and his wife Anne Hague ( 1766-1841 ). He was a younger brother of the bible scholar Edward Greswell ( 1797-1869 ). After he was first educated by his father, he began in 1818 with a grant from his studies at Worcester College, University of Oxford. In 1822 he was appointed assistant teacher at Worcester College and the following year as a teacher. In June 1824 Greswell was a Fellow. In 1822 he graduated from the Bachelor of Arts, 1825 Master of Arts in 1836 and a Bachelor of Divinity. Greswell was ordained in 1828, but was never active as a pastor. On April 5, 1836 he married Joana Julia, a daughter of James Armetriding, the rector of Steeple Aston was. After marriage Greswell gave up his membership at Worcester College, but remained until 1853 still a teacher there.

Greswell was interested in many things. He was one of the first members of the Ashmolean Society was established in 1828. On June 10, 1830 Greswell was accepted as a member of the Royal Society.
