Richard Luce, Baron Luce

Richard Napier Luce, Baron Luce, KG, GCVO, PC, DL (* October 14, 1936 in Westminster) was from 2000 to 2006, Lord Chamberlain of the Household of Queen Elizabeth. Previously, he was Governor of Gibraltar, sat for the Conservative Party in Parliament and was Minister in the government.

Early career

He was born in Westminster and went to Wellington College ( Berkshire ) and Christ's College (Cambridge). His military service, he graduated from 1955 to 1958 in Cyprus. He worked from 1960 to 1962 in the public service as a District Officer in Kenya. He then worked from 1963 to 1965 at Gallaher Ltd as Product Manager and then went to Spirella as Marketing Manager. From 1968 to 1971 he was Managing Director of the National Innovation Centre.

From 1972 to 1979 he was CEO of of IFA Consultants Ltd and simultaneously from Selenex Ltd ( 1973-79 ) and Courtenay Stewart International ( 1975-79 ).

Political career

Richard Luce was chosen at an intermediate choice in 1971 for the constituency of Arundel and Shoreham in the House of Commons for the first time. After a clean slate of the constituencies in 1974, when accounted for this constituency, he moved to Shoreham constituency in parliament. After the British general election, 1992, he retired from Parliament.

He was appointed by the Minister for Trade and Consumer Affairs to Parliamentary Private Secretary in 1972. After the Conservative Party lost the majority in the 1972 election, he was Whip of the opposition.

When the Conservatives came back to power in the British general election, 1979, he was Parliamentary State Secretary in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In 1981 he was appointed Minister of State in the same Ministry. In 1982, he joined together with his boss, Foreign Secretary, Lord Carrington, because of the Falklands War back. He was criticized by various quarters, as he had allegedly sent the wrong signals to Argentina that Britain would not respond to a possible invasion. In 1983 he returned, however, as a Minister of State in his office back. In 1985, he joined the office of Lord President of the Council as Minister of Culture, his last Cabinet position. He gave the post in 1990.

Lord Luce was knighted in the Order of the Garter in 1991 and is a member of the Privy Council since 1986.

After leaving Parliament

Lord Luce was 1992-1996 Vice- Chancellor of the University of Buckingham. In 1997 he became Governor of Gibraltar, he had the office until 2000. In 2000 he was appointed as Baron Luce for Life Peer. 2000 Knight Grand Cross of him the Royal Victorian Order ( GCVO ) was given and he was Lord Chamberlain in the royal household.

Lord Luce resigned his post as Lord Chamberlain on 11 October 2006. His successor was the Earl Peel.

In 2008 he became Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter ( KG ) ( Order of the Garter ). The Order of the Garter is the highest order of knighthood in the United Kingdom. The ceremony will be held personally by the Queen. The Order has a maximum of 24 members at the same time. Members of the order are the former Prime Minister Sir John Major and a number of former ministers and members of the royal household.

On April 26, 2012 it was announced that Lord Luce had been appointed by the Prime Minister David Cameron as a member of the commission to appoint the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury.

Lord Luce is president of the Voluntary Arts Network.

He has two sons, Alexander and Edward Luce Luce.
