Richard von Metternich

Prince Richard Klemens von Metternich - Winneburg (born 7 January 1829 in Vienna, † March 1, 1895 ) was an Austrian diplomat.

Biography

Metternich was the son of Austrian chancellor Klemens Wenzel von Metternich Prince and the Baroness Marie Antonia of Leykam. In 1856 he married his niece Pauline Countess Sándor, daughter of his half-sister Léontine of Metternich.

In 1855 he was Secretary of Legation at the Austrian Embassy in Paris, 1856 Envoy and Minister Plenipotentiary of Austria at the Saxon court in Dresden. In 1861 was a hereditary member of the manor house of the Austrian Imperial Council.

From November 14 1859 to December 13, 1871 was Metternich 's ambassador to Paris, where the court of Napoleon III he. society played a significant role with his wife Pauline. There he tried in vain to draw France in the German war on the side of Austria.

He was committed to the Enrichtung the First International Art Exhibition in Vienna.

In retirement he edited his father's estate.

Progeny

Richard and Pauline von Metternich had three children:

  • Sophie Princess of Metternich - Winneburg (1857-1941)
  • Antoinette Pascalina Countess Metternich Sandor - of Winneburg (1862-1890)
  • Klementina Marie Countess Metternich Sandor - of Winneburg (1870-1963)

Since his marriage brought forth only three daughters, the prince title passed to his half-brother Paul von Metternich following his death.
