Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad

The Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad ( RF & P short or RFP ) was an American railway company, the Richmond, Virginia with Washington, DC combined. On the main line were Alexandria, Quantico, Fredericksburg, Ashland and Milford. In Richmond, the RFP was associated with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, in Alexandria and at Union Station in Washington, DC with the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Southern Railway. In addition, in Potomac Yards, there was a connection to the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad.

The RF & P was a so-called Bridge Line with the slogan Linking North and South. The term Bridgeline means that the largest share of cargo transported between different railway companies and produced not directly on the route or has been removed.

Today, the routes of the former RF & P of CSX Transportation belong.

History

In 1836, the first section of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad was opened between Richmond and Hazel Run. 1837 followed the route section to Fredericksburg, and on September 30, 1842, the route of the Potomac River at Aquia Creek was completed. By opening a route extension to the north, which branched off to Quantico for Brooke, the old line to Aquia Creek was soon to branch line.

At the other end of the route, the Alexandria and Washington Railroad, opened in 1857, a route from the southern end of the Long Bridge over the Potomac River to Alexandria. When that company went bankrupt in 1887, it was still re-opened in the same year as Alexandria and Washington Railway as a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR ). In 1873, the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad presented with their branch line on the Long Bridge to connect to Washington, DC ago, which was also shared by the A & W.

The Alexandria and Fredericksburg Railroad, also a subsidiary of the PRR, presented in 1872 an important link of these routes in Alexandria to Quantico ago.
